I really want to share why I chose my project to be about Kazakh literature. So, in 2023, for the first time in my life, I got to compete in the Republic Scientific Projects Fair as a 9th grader. My partner and I chose a topic about analyzing protagonist and antagonist characters in Mukhtar Auezov’s works. It was really fun and eye-opening for a teenager to learn that literature can actually be interesting. All because of one work that made me very emotional and instantly became my favorite - “Who is at Fault?” (“Кім кінәлі?”). Yes, it’s also M. Auezov’s piece of writing. Maybe I’ll tell more about this story later, but its effect on me was GINORMOUS! My partner and I actually got second place, but we fumbled in the next round because of our low scores on the tests💔(1) Before that, in 8th grade, I started reading Volume 1 of “The Path of Abai”(“Абай жолы”). It was a very hard piece of writing to understand. I barely managed to finish it, but with the help of audiobooks and a movie about Kunanbay, I somehow got through it. Definitely reading it at such an early age, when Kazakh seemed like one of the hardest subjects, wasn’t the greatest idea, but it still had an amazing impact on my understanding of our literature.(2) Eventually, at the start of 11th grade, about a year ago, I continued doing scientific projects. But this time I expanded the range of my research on M. Auezov’s works from 3 pieces to almost 9. Reading new stories and even rereading some of the previous ones really made me look at literature differently. This time I participated solo and got third place! I even managed to get a good score in the next stage. Sadly, I didn’t get enough points to move on to the following round😔💔(3) It was really hard to read and try to understand classical literature when I had never even liked it before. My favorite subject was always (and still is)English!!! But it really changed my point of view. Through reading, I got to feel the pain and suffering that our ancestors experienced back then. It was a journey that eventually led me to an idea 💡 Reading physical books has always been a problem for me, so electronic books became my salvation. But not every author has their works available online for free! Of course, the works of Abai, M. Auezov, A. Baitursynuly, and other popular Kazakh authors are widespread on the Internet. But when it comes to other writers who are just as important, it can be really hard to find their books online. For example, “Kazakhs on Their Way Back from a Wedding Party” by Sultanali Balgabayev. I spent a whole day searching for this comedy, but I could only find parts of it! I was lucky enough to find the full story in my 11th-grade chrestomathy, but it wasn’t the same. All of this opened my eyes to how hard it can be for people to find a work they genuinely want to read. After spending hours searching, many people simply lose interest and give up. I also realized that there are lots of people who don’t speak Kazakh but still want to immerse themselves in its literary world. That’s what motivated me to start this project. Right now, I’m only taking my first steps toward making it happen, but every project starts somewhere. If my work can help even a few people discover Kazakh literature more easily, then I will already consider it a success.
